Unpopular Opinion: I don’t watch reality TV anymore

I know this may come as a shock, but I’m not watching reality television anymore.

Bachelor, Kardashian’s, Housewives. No more.

Here’s why:

Let me start by saying that there is absolutely no judgement coming from me if you enjoy watching these shows! These shows were just bringing too much anxiety and drama into my life. I didn’t really experience drama with friends until I was out of college. And it was enough to last a lifetime. The drama and false sense of reality these shows envoke is just not good for my mental health.

Every time Ramona and Sonja got in a drunken brawl, my anxiety would start to creep up. Picking to be on Team Vanderpump or Team Rinna perpetuates the act of women turning on other women instead of lifting each other up. Does this sound preachy? I don’t mean for it to be. I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again, if women would just stop tearing each other down, we’d be absolutely unstoppable.

Being in the dating game, it’s actually hard for me to watch shows like The Bachelor. You love him on night one? Bless. It’s funny, yes. But concerning? Also yes. I gave up after Ari’s season. It’s once again perpetuating the idea that women need to compete with each other for a man’s attention.

And the Kardashian’s treat each other terribly, promote products like flat tummy tea, and aren’t honest about the work they’ve had done (remember that Kyle lip challenge?). Are they a family and do they love each other? Absolutely. Are they savvy businesswomen? 100%. But I can’t do this anymore. It’s too much.

So what am I doing instead? I’m committed to reading more! I’m currently readying Crazy Rich Girlfriend and these are the next ones on my list: Where the Crawdads Sing, Educated, The Light We lost, My Oxford Year

Anything you’re trying to give up and replacing with something else instead?

Have a great Thursday. Thanks for reading!
